Firstly – how are you and how have you been managing during the Coronavirus pandemic?
I’m doing well, thank you. Having reflected over the past year, managing myself during the pandemic initially took some time to get used to. This was due to the uptake of working, studying, and socialising becoming virtual. I’m sure for most individuals like myself, it was uncharted territory. However, with the support from my employer, university, and family and friends, I have been able to adapt to the ‘new normal’. This has helped me manage and balance my work, studies, while also remaining positive throughout the pandemic. I’ve also had the opportunity to pick up new hobbies and spend quality time with my family including my niece which has been fun!
What is your current role? What is your typical day?
As a Tech Industry Gold Digital Degree Apprentice, my typical day has varied throughout my time at Chubb Fire & Security. This initially ranged from customer and technical support for internal applications. This gave me the foundation to enhance my understanding of the platforms and tools offered. Now, most of my time is spent providing support and coordination on projects, some projects even building upon the platforms I supported before! This has given me further exposure within the business as I’ve liaised with different stakeholders, departments and had the opportunity to travel to different sites within the UK, along with seeing the project life cycle in different stages. I’ve also recently worked on an individual project to complete a full gap analysis on a time recording system which will tie in on my final year project.
What was the best experience of your Tech Industry Gold degree apprenticeship?
The best experience for me is having the opportunity to learn at university while applying myself in the workplace gaining new skills. This has allowed me to contribute to exciting projects which make a real difference to the business. In addition, I’ve also enjoyed meeting new people who have extensive knowledge and experience within the field from whom I’ve learned. It’s really given me an eye-opener into the industry and the different paths available.
What was the most challenging experience of your Tech Industry Gold degree apprenticeship?
Having already completed an apprenticeship, I’ve harnessed how to be organised and how to manage my time effectively to meet all deadlines while working full time. I think my most challenging experience was the enrolment of the apprenticeship as I transitioned into a new workplace at Chubb Fire & Security. This was my first-time changing jobs so having to adapt to a new environment, settling into a new role where I wanted to excel, leave a good impression and be on top of my studies was initially challenging. Having said that, everyone was welcoming, supportive and I’ve had a major insight into a leading global provider of fire safety, security, and monitoring solutions.
What would you say now, to yourself, before you enrolled on your degree apprenticeship?
Now being so close to completing my course, I would say trust the process and stay open-minded! There may be some challenging times but it’s all part of the learning curve and development so take every opportunity available, don’t be afraid to speak up, make suggestions, and network with other individuals from your course, workplace, and even outside it!
What would you say to anyone considering a Tech Industry Gold degree apprenticeship?
I’d say go for it! It’s such a great opportunity to be able to immerse yourself in a workplace where there are dedicated support and mentors who want to see you succeed. It’s a foot in the door in the industry you want to be in providing invaluable experience, knowledge, and the skills you may not obtain by going solely through the traditional route.
What are your career plans?
As I have embedded myself with Chubb Fire & Security, I am hoping to pursue my journey with them to continue to enhance my experience and challenge myself further. In addition, I am hoping to complete a PRINCE2 qualification which will give me the foundation for project management.
Who inspires you?
My inspiration comes from everyone around me. Throughout my time at school, university, and workplaces, I’ve learned there is no single path to take to become successful. Attending university, completing apprenticeships to working your way up in a company can all take you to where you want to be. Hard work pays off and this is seen with everyone who surrounds me.
Anything else to add?
Apprenticeship numbers are on the rise and having completed two levels, I believe it’s given me the foundations to excel in my career. I’ve had the chance to see what it really means to work in the industry, experience different roles, and have the opportunity to meet amazing people. If you are considering applying for an apprenticeship, make sure you do your research on the course, and the company ensuring it’s right for you!
