Class of 2021: I’m an IT analyst at Textron Specialized Vehicles

Thomas Hoong Class of 2021

Name: Thomas Hoong
Degree Title: Information Technology Management for Business
University: Oxford Brookes University

How did you find out about Tech Industry Gold accredited degrees?

I wanted to do a course that combined both business and IT and found a course called Information Technology Management for Business. It was really important that the degree that I was chose was accredited and recognised by employers. Tech Industry Gold accreditation met that in many ways by having a network of employers and the events they host.

What was the best moment of your degree experience?

This is such a hard answer for me to say as I can think of many things. I would argue that the best experience was being one of the first cohort joining the Tech Allies’ Summer Institute programme that was set by Tech Industry Gold alumni. I was able to get exclusive insight into various industries (Banking, Tech and Pharma), learn new things and improve my existing skills. At the end of the programme, we had to do a presentation and my group won “overall best idea” that was selected by judges. I was able to use this experience to my advantage. I stood out among many students when applying for a placement, thus allowed me to secure a placement at GE Aviation as a Digital Technology intern, helping me start my career journey within IT.

What was the most challenging experience?

The most challenging experience was doing my final year during Covid-19. Adapting to a pandemic whilst finishing my degree was not something I was expecting to return to after doing my placement year. It really challenged me to be as resilient as possible and never to give up. Eventually, this all paid off as I was able to get a first-class honours classification. I am proud to have achieved this and helped many classmates who were struggling as well.

What would you say now to yourself before you enrolled on your degree?

Do not be afraid to go out of your comfort zone and sign up for the many opportunities that arise. This will really help you grow and develop!

What would you say to anyone considering a Tech Industry Gold accredited degree?

I would strongly urge anyone to take a Tech Industry Gold accredited degree if you have an interest in business and technology. The career and networking opportunities that this degree provides are endless. There is a big demand for companies wanting to hire graduates who understand both the business and technology acumen, which this degree fulfils. The networking and opportunities are amazing. I had been able to take part in exclusive events set up by alumni, met students from other universities and alumni from my university who had done a Tech Industry Gold accredited degree!

What are you planning to do this summer?

This summer I plan to get my driver’s licence as well as meet up with friends and family that I have not seen in a long time!

What are your career plans?

I just recently started my graduate role as an IT analyst at Textron Specialized Vehicles. I am looking forward to building my career within IT, learn and use technologies that can help the business.

Who inspires you?

The people I met through university, placement and the networking opportunities through the north/south/tech allies events are people who have made an impact in my life. The support I had gained from each person I met helped my confidence to grow, develop and it taught me the true meaning of giving back to the community.

Anything else to add?

I would like to thank TechSkills and everyone I have met throughout this journey for their support. I feel like I have really grown as a person and would not have been able to achieve this without the help I have received. Finally, for any current or prospective student (including parents too!) studying a Tech Industry Gold Degree experience, I am happy to connect on Linkedin if you want to reach out to me.
